What is a trout and where does it come from?

A trout is a kind of fish belonging to the family Salmonidae that also includes fish like salmon or char. There are different species of trout, ranging from the rainbow trout, the brown trout, the brook trout or the lake trout, all likely to be found in clear streams, rivers and cold lakes. The continents trouts typically inhabit are North America, Europe and northern Asia, though they have already been introduced to other parts of the world too.

Trouts are currently popular for both recreational fishing and as food sources, thanks to their delicate flavours and aroma as well as tender flesh. The first time people realised trouts could potentially be consumed was by Romans during the ancient period. When the medieval times came, trouts have specifically become popular in Europe in monastic communities. Monks often raised trouts in artificial ponds to have something to consume during fasting, when meat was strictly forbidden. By the time Renaissance came, trouts spread widely and began to occupy different cuisines for more reasons than the fasting period.

In no time, cookbooks full of diverse recipes and tips on how to correctly prepare trouts developed. They all suggested methods of grilling, smoking, baking and roasting trouts, importantly with herbs, different spices and sauces to achieve the strong release of flavours and the overall fish aroma. Today, Hana’s Recipes portal has prepared a photo recipe, explaining a tasty combination of the trout with butter, baked for no more than 20 minutes.

Check it out below and impress everyone at the table with a luxurious look and a delicate fish flavour!

Ingredients needed for a trout with butter

  • 2 whole gutted trouts,
  • 60 g of butter,
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil,
  • 4 cloves of garlic,
  • 1 lemon,

  • Salt,
  • Ground black pepper,

Read more: The most suitable side dishes to serve with the trout

As you certainly noticed, we have only shown you how to prepare a trout with butter but have not mentioned the side dishes that go very well with this fish. Here are some ideas from us what you can combine, so that the fish aroma and flavour are still well preserved:

  1. Roasted vegetables, including asparagus, Brussels sprouts or carrots. Altogether, they provide a savoury, a bit caramelised flavour that contrasts ideally with the delicate trout with butter. Not to mention that vegetables are generally a more healthy option to use as a side dish to obtain extra nutrients.
  2. Rice. You can serve a traditional rice or quite a popular combination with a trout with butter – rice infused with lemon and garlic. With the second type, you could make use of the leftovers coming from the recipe for the trout. The citrusy note complements the fish flavour a trout releases, without any fear of overpowering it. 3. Mashed potatoes and their creamy, buttery texture go very well with the taste of trout that also has a butter inside out. Similarly to the infused rice above, mashed potatoes could be prepared with the leftovers as well, for instance mixed with garlic or herbs like parsley to avoid food waste and contribute to stronger aroma of the whole meal at the end.
  4. Quinoa salad has become a specifically popular side dish to go hand in hand with a trout with butter. However, Hana’s Recipes would like to emphasise that any kind of salad might potentially be a suitable side dish to the fish, thanks to the crispiness and ideally savoury flavours vegetables bring with themselves. Check out the salads from the past blogs and hopefully you will find a match to your trout with butter.

Trout with butter: Another recipe to master a fish preparation

FAQ 1: Can I substitute the butter with a different fat?

Sure! Although butter is probably the most suitable fat to season the trout with to properly release its fish aroma, you can also use alternatives like the olive oil or even herb-infused oils. The choice remains up to you!

FAQ 2: Is trout healthy to consume?

Trout is claimed to be very healthy, even amongst already nutritious fish types. In particular, trouts are high in omega-3s that support the proper heart health and reduce any kind of inflammation. They also supply the human body with so called “lean protein”, being low in saturated fats and calories. This is beneficial for the muscle growth as well as for their repair. In addition, trouts contain necessary vitamins, such as B12 and D, supporting energy levels and bones in general.
Therefore, do not hesitate and consider trouts in your weekly balanced diet for more essential nutrients!
