How did we get to strawberry tiramisu?
It does not come as a surprise that strawberry tiramisu has evolved from the classic Italian dessert. Tiramisu itself originated in the Veneto region in the 1960s, typically made of several layers of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, mascarpone cheese, cocoa and sometimes a liqueur such as Marsala wine or rum. The moment tiramisu became globally popular and not just inside of Italy, other variations started to develop from it, including the fruity tiramisu like the strawberry one.
The most probable story claims that the concept of strawberry tiramisu (as for any other fruity version) was created when chefs and home cooks naturally started to experiment with seasonal ingredients and locally diverse flavours. Quite soon they realised that fresh pieces of fruit like strawberries could be an ideal addition to a dessert such as tiramisu. They were not wrong!
The recipe for strawberry tiramisu always maintained the layered structure and creamy texture of the original. It only introduced newly combined flavours, thanks to a slightly adjusted list of ingredients being utilised. In the strawberry tiramisu, people get the tendency to replace coffee with fruit juice or liqueur and the cocoa powder with fresh strawberry pieces or strawberry puree. Strawberry-flavoured liqueur might be a nice addition too, if you manage to get it.
Exactly as the original, it did not take long for this variation to spread worldwide. The dessert is specifically enjoyed during hot summer days when strawberries are in season and their refreshing properties become much needed. The same goes for other berries and therefore, many chefs and home cooks now implement not only strawberries into their tiramisu, but also blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc. This should be the sign for you to always adjust the recipe based on your needs and current cravings to achieve the maximum satisfaction. Keep that in mind also with the photo recipe below! The list of ingredients is not fixed!
Good luck with the overall preparation!
Ingredients
- 250 g of long sponge cakes,
- 150 ml of coffee (optional),
- 50 ml of chocolate / coffee liqueur (optional),
- 250 g of mascarpone cheese,
- 200 ml of 33-40% whipping cream,
- 250 g of 16% sour cream,
- 40 g of powdered sugar,
- ½ tsp of vanilla extract,
- 200-250 g of fresh strawberries
Preparation of the heavenly strawberry tiramisu
1
Start by preparing the coffee and letting it cool. Pour the liqueur into it and mix (both ingredients are optional, so feel free to skip this step). Then pile long sponge cakes on the bottom as shown, so that they cover the entire surface. Pour coffee over cold coffee, but be careful! 4-5 tablespoons should be enough.
2
Put mascarpone cheese and whipped cream into a large bowl. They must be well chilled first! After that, mix altogether.
3
Next, add sour cream, vanilla and sugar. Beat together until thick, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
4
Wash the strawberries for tiramisu and cut them into smaller pieces.
5
Put one half of the whipped cream on sponge cakes and spread it well.
6
Place the sliced strawberries on top of the second layer of sponge cakes, which were soaked briefly in coffee. Wet the sponge only in one half with the flat side. You only need to dip it in and immediately pull it out. The sponge also absorbs the moisture from the cream.
7
Spread the other half of the cream on top and put it in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours to harden, but ideally let it harden for 12 hours (overnight). Sprinkle with crushed fresh strawberries right before serving.
Excellent job! Hope everything went according to the plan for you and now you can fully enjoy your strawberry tiramisu!

FAQ 1: Can I use frozen strawberries instead of fresh ones?
Fresh strawberries are definitely recommended for the best texture, aroma and the right combination of flavours achieved at the end. However, you will not ruin the recipe completely, if you use the frozen strawberry pieces. Once you do, make sure to thaw them and drain them well to avoid any excess moisture in your dessert.
FAQ 2: Is there a way to make strawberry tiramisu lighter?
In order to make a lighter version, you should use a low-fat mascarpone cheese, a reduced-fat sour cream as well as a light whipping cream. Those are the heaviest ingredients utilised within the recipe. However, keep in mind that although they might contribute well to your human body, they will also alter the overall taste and texture of the strawberry tiramisu. Therefore, make sure you understand the steps correctly!
