Cheese rolls with ham and eggs, one of many delicious meals of unique forms that New Zealand offers you. Let’s prepare it today with Hana’s Recipes portal, suggesting easy steps for you to successfully complete the recipe. However, in this case in a slightly different way than the original from New Zealand…
Cheese rolls with ham and eggs from Southland region
As introduced, cheese rolls with ham and eggs originated in New Zealand, where they keep their popularity under the name “Southland cheese rolls”. Many citizens also refer to it as “Southern sushi”. The recipe evolved in the 20th century (particularly in 1930s and 1940s) as an ideal procedure to make use of readily available ingredients.
It didn’t take long until the simplicity of cheese rolls made them a symbol of local hospitality and a comfort meal enjoyed by the majority of residents. The highest peak of popularity is dated back to 1950s and 1960s. At this time, the recipe was already quite known and began to appear in different cookbooks as well as at locally famous fundraisers, school events and other social gatherings.
Cheese rolls from the Southland region typically consist of a filling made of cheese, standard / evaporated milk and onion soup mix, all rolled up in a bread. They are either being grilled or baked until perfectly golden and crispy. In this blog post though, we will rather focus on how to make cheese rolls with the addition of eggs and ham or salami as well as on how to serve it cold during various occasions. This is one of many cultural variations of the recipe that has spread across different continents over the years, thanks to high popularity of original cheese rolls from New Zealand.

Ingredients
- 250 g of sliced cheese,
- 120 g of cream cheese,
- 60 g of butter,
- Salt,
- A handful of herbs,
- 4 hard-boiled eggs,
- 150 g of ham / salami,
- Mustard / horseradish (optional, depends on your preference)
Preparation of the cheese rolls with ham and eggs
1
First, hard boil the eggs. Place the sliced cheese on a sheet with baking paper, so that the edges overlap by at least 0.5 cm. Put it like this in the oven, heated to 170°C for 3-5 minutes. Cheese should melt gently. As a result, individual slices will join into one large piece.
2
When you get the desired cheese shape, take it out of the oven. Let it cool down. After that, arrange the slices of ham as shown in the picture below. If you wish, you may replace the ham with salami and spread it in the similar way.
3
Mix softened butter with cream cheese in a bowl. You may also season with mustard or horseradish. Then add finely chopped herbs (parsley, chives, spinach, etc.) and salt. Peel the eggs and add the yolks to the filling first. Break them up using a fork and mix into the filling.
4
Next, finely chop the egg whites and mix them into the filling as well.
5
Spread the filling evenly (about 0.5 cm thick) on the cheese & ham layers. Leave about 3-4 cm free at the top (take a look at the picture below).
6
Slowly begin to roll and press the roll up to the upper clean edge. Once done, wrap it in the food foil and let it harden properly in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. The roll prepared in this way is advised to be consumed within 24 hours.
And that’s it! Bon appetite to your cheese rolls with ham and eggs!
